image

GVC (GVC2023)

Featuring Dale Hawkins, Bob Reed, John Hampton, Wes Holly, Ray Stanley, Hank Mizell, Billy Prager, Benny Ingram, Bobby Sisco, Herbie Duncan etc.

It wasn't just black folks who migrated to Chicago to escape the hard times down south, rural white folks also made the move to work in the factories and steel works and of course, they took their music with them and that's how this stuff came to be recorded up north in the Windy City.

This 60 track set is jumpin' with rural rockabilly hicks playing the same music you'd hear in Louisiana, Tennessee or Alabama. Taken from 45s on Profile, Bandera, Chief, Limelight, Tempus and other small labels you get such rockin' items as Bob Stanley's lascivious "I Can't Wait", Everett Carpenter's bulldozing big beat number "Run Run Mabel" and Harry Carter's attempt at Elvis on "You Made Me Love You".

I'm particularly impressed with Benny Ingram's flat-out rocker "Jello Sal" and I just love the guitar opening to The Rockin' R's real gone instrumental "The Beat" and John Hampton's version of "Honey Hush" which just has to be heard to be believed!!

I just can't get enough of this - it's one of the best rockabilly CDs I've heard in ages.
