MUDDY WATERS

STEPPIN' STONE (3CD & DVD)

PROPER (PROPERBOX152)

Forty four tracks by Muddy Waters on 2 CDs plus a third CD featuring Little Walter, Buddy Guy, James Cotton, Junior Wells, Jimmy Rogers, Robert Jnr Lockwood and Walter Horton

Disc 1 is a 20 track compilation of the great man's material containing lesser known goodies for the most part - not another ‘Best Of' by any means.

Disc 2 contains 12 tracks that influenced and inspired Muddy and the resulting corresponding tracks as recreated by him. For instance, you get Memphis Minnie's ‘Bumble Bee' followed by Muddy's ‘Honey Bee',  Robert Petway doing ‘Catfish' then Muddy playing ‘Rollin' Stone' and his version of  ‘Got My Mojo Working' hard on the heels of Ann Cole's original. See what I mean?

Disc 3 is filled with contemporaries who come dangerously close to being in the same league. Twenty tracks by Little Walter, Buddy Guy, James Cotton, Junior Wells, Jimmy Rogers, Robert Jnr Lockwood, Walter Horton. Mostly harmonica players but what's wrong with that?

Disc 4 is the DVD ‘Talkin' Muddy Waters' and it collects together energetic reminiscences and enthusiastic facts from Paul Oliver, Tony Russell, Charles Shaar Murray, Nigel Williamson, Sid Griffin, Dick Waterman, Guy Davis, Charlie Musselwhite, Phil May, Lawrence Cohn, and Robert Birdsong.

Great examination of Muddy's work. Another gem.
