ACE (CDCH2 1225)

Last year the first Theme Time Radio Hour compilation was a huge critical success gaining tons of 5 star reviews and selling like crazy. Well, here we go again with another batch of songs compiled in association with Eddie Gorodetsky (producer of the show) and Jeff Rosen (Dylan's manager). It's an officially approved release which substantiates Dylan's affection and cavernous knowledge through his choice of this hand picked material.

The whole thing is filled with a vast array of exhilarating obscurities and luscious slices of weirdness that would take you and me a dozen years to excavate along side the odd track that is as familiar as fried bread. Desmond Dekker's 007 (Shanty Town), Charlie Feather's One Hand Loose, The Contours First I Look At The Purse, Little Esther's Aged And Mellow and Wanda Jackson's Let's Have A Party rub shoulders with such way out tunes as Miriam Makeba's zinging Make Us One, The Don Tosti Conjunto's mad bopper Mambo Del Pachuco and The Dirt Bombs demonic shout-out Your Love Belongs Under A Rock. Billie Holiday's Gloomy Sunday, Mose Allison's Young Man's Blues and BB King's Walkin' Dr Bill jostle for attention with Porter Wagoner's Cold Hard Facts Of Life and Louis Armstrong's cool grooving My Walking Stick while Sun Ra's Rocket Nine Takes Off For The Planet Venus makes Captain Beefheart's Ice Cream For Crow sound like cocktail jazz!

All in all it's a hotchpotch, a treasure trove, a garden of delights stuffed to the gills with dazzling music and all the more reason for Bob Dylan and his co-horts to keep delighting us with Theme Time Radio Hours and for Ace to keep issuing these great CDs.
