Megaforce (MEGA1603)

T-Bone Shuffle, Further On Up The Road, Done Somebody Wrong, Got My Mojo Working, Last Night, Maybelline, Bright Lights Big City, Honky Tonk, Dust My Broom, Short Fat Fanny, Come Back Baby.

Johnny Winter is back with an album that honours the musicians that mean the world to him so the tunes come from the repertoires of T-Bone Walker, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Bobby Bland, Elmore James, Robert Johnson, Jimmy Reed, Larry Williams and Chuck Berry. It's not just Johnny on this CD though so, as well as his own sizzling guitar work, we hear some full bodied playing from contemporary guitarists like Sonny Landreth, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, Jimmy Vivino and Warren Haynes, a bit of blues blowing from harmonica players John Popper and Frank Latoore, great organ from John Medeski and even brother Edgar blowing his sax on the instrumental Honky Tonk.

It's all rocking stuff with Johnny in great form roaring out on stinging solos in every song but still allowing his guests to step up and show off too. Warren Haynes slips in some Allman Brothers type lines on the intro to Elmore's Done Somebody Wrong, Vince Gill adds a bit of country bounce to the motorvatin' version of Chuck Berry's Maybelline and Susan Tedeschi duets soulfully with the master on Bright Lights Big City and then both of them tear off guitar solos that are almost as electrifying as Derek Trucks thundering slide guitar licks on Dust My Broom. Everybody pulls out all the stops - especially Johnny himself on the fabulous slow blues Come Back Baby which features some truly atmospheric organ playing from John Medeski.

It's great to hear the legendary Johnny Winter back in top form. This is five star stuff indeed!
