One of the most significant milestones in each calendar year is once again upon us - the appearance of the Blues Images calendar.

Now into its 12th edition, the 2015 version is once again full of the beautiful photography and advertising artwork from a bygone era that we have all come to love.

This year, as with each previous year so far, John Tefteller and his dedicated team has again surpassed themselves with twelve more masterpieces of art including rare photographs of Memphis Minnie And Kansas Joe, Willie ‘Poor Boy’ Lofton, Brother Son Bonds And Hammie Nixon, Cannon’s Jug Stompers, The Famous Blue Jay Singers Of Birmingham and Roosevelt Sykes, as well as advertising imagery relating to 78rpm releases from the 1920s of Henry Thomas, Charley Patton, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Mississippi Sheiks, Chocolate Brown and Blind Blake.

As always, the calendar comes with a free CD which contains 12 songs that directly match up to the monthly calendar artwork, The highlights of these this year include well-known classics such as Charley Patton’s A Spoonful Blues, Cannon’s Jug Stompers Walk Right In, When The Levee Breaks by Memphis Minnie And Kansas Joe and Match Box Blues by Blind Lemon Jefferson, alongside less-known artists and titles such as Clanka A Lanka (Sleep On Mother) by The Famous Blue Jay Singers Of Birmingham and You Got What I Want by Chocolate Brown With Blind Blake.

And, if you have bought previous volumes of this calendar, you'll know to expect plenty of additional material on the CD, expanded this year to include a further 12 bonus cuts. Many of these are further sides from the artists already featured so far but there are also choice cuts from other fabulous blues artists, including two great sides from Bill Wilber (Greyhound Blues and My Babe My Babe) and one each from Papa Harvey Hull And Long Cleve Reed (Don’t You Leave Me Here) and Garfield Akers (Jumpin’ And Shoutin’ Blues).

The most significant inclusion here however is both sides of the ultra-rare Tommy Johnson 78 RPM record on Paramount Records - Alcohol And Jake Blues and Ridin’ Horse, bought in auction recently by John Tefteller for $37,100. This is believed to be one of only two surviving copies remaining in the world (and the other copy is said to be in worn condition). Both sides have been re-mastered into as good a sound quality as can be realistically expected from a 1929 Paramount!

The Tommy Johnson aside, you may be familiar with a number of the included tracks but they are most unlikely to have sounded this good before, being newly re-mastered from the finest copies of 78rpm records available. And when someone pays over $37,000 for a couple of songs and pretty much gives them away by including them on the free CD here, the price of this calendar doesn’t seem such a bad deal after all.

The best in the series thus far, but you know we say this each and every year!
