Ace (CDCHD1471)

Henry Gray, Juke Boy Bonner, Lightnin’ Slim, Slim Harpo, Boogie Jake, Lazy Lester, Lonesome Sundown, Boozoo Chavis, Clifton Chenier, Silas Hogan, Schoolboy Cleve, Clarence Garlow, Jimmy Anderson, Jonny Sonnier and more…

Yet another in a fabulous series of releases that mine the vaults of various independent labels operating in Louisiana in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

In a series that now runs to 14 volumes, this is just the third that is focused on the swamp blues and zydeco musical styles that we have long treasured from the recordings of many of the artists featured here. But if the familiarity of the names included on this volume is higher than we have come to expect in the rest of the series (Swamp Pop, Rock ‘N Roll and Rhythm & Blues) there remains plenty for the hardened collector to enjoy.

Of the 28 tracks, 18 are held by the compilers of this volume to be extremely rare (on CD at least). And, for those numbers that you may have elsewhere in your collection, previously unknown or alternate takes have been included here wherever it has been possible to do so.

If you have been with us for our reviews of the previous volumes in the series, surely we don’t need to go through all this again, do we? Simply put, each of ‘By The Bayou’ CDs contain all that is great about the music of Louisiana, none more so than this!
